In January 2024, I set out for Argentina to fulfill a dream that had refused to let go of me since a chance bus ride six years earlier: Aconcagua, the highest mountain of the Americas. Ahead of me lay three weeks of dust, storm, and thin air – with a group of strangers who would soon share everything you can share on a mountain, a Japanese climber setting out on the final expedition of his life, and a night at 5,500 meters when everything hung in the balance.

A book that belongs in the mountains
"The Stone Sentinel" began as an expedition report for friends – and became a book about the questions behind mountaineering: Why do we go up there? What does altitude do to the mind? And why is it rarely the fastest who reach the summit, but the most patient?
The appendix covers the practical side: costs, training, gear, altitude sickness, and the dangers of the normal route – assessed honestly instead of sugar-coated.

After sixteen days in which the mountain had let no one up, our window opened. Fifteen hours after setting out at minus 25 degrees, I stood at the summit cross – and typed three words into my satellite device that someone at home was desperately waiting for.

About
I'm Raphael Mielke. I grew up at the edge of Germany's Odenwald hills and now live in Munich. I was a track-and-field athlete before the mountains found me – since 2018 I've climbed more than 60 peaks in over 16 countries, from the Valais Alps to Bolivia to Argentina. In between, I co-built a software company.
"The Stone Sentinel" is my first book. It began as an expedition report for friends and became an attempt to write down honestly why people climb mountains, what they find up there – and what the ones waiting below carry with them.
